Pumpkin Carving for Charity

Each year, members of the Guild participate in pumpkin carving at Saskatoon's Market Mall.   Money is raised by the event for the local charity Denny Carr Secret Santa Campaign.  The event is sponsored by Market Mall, and CJWW radio of Saskatoon.

In 2001, members of the Guild took part with local dignitaries in carving a 715 pound pumpkin! The pumpkin was grown by a local physician, and purchased by Boryski's Butcher Block. The pumpkin was carved in front of the Bessborough Hotel in downtown Saskatoon, with passers-by donating to UNICEF.

In 2007, members raised over $700 from the sales pumpkins (carved and plain) for the annual Denny Carr Secret Santa campaign.

Toymaking for Denny Carr Secret Santa

In 2000, members of the Guild started making toys for the Denny Carr Secret Santa Campaign.  The Secret Santa activities have been around in Saskatoon for some time, and in the first year of participation, members donated approximately 185 toys.   These toys (amoung others) are distributed by members of the Denny Carr Secret Santa organization, in conjunction with the Salvation Army.  The Guild library houses a number of books from which members get patterns or ideas from.  Materials come from donated resources, with shop equipment and time all being volunteer.  This is a rewarding experience for all those involved.  Donations for this cause are welcome.   For information, contact the Toymaking Coordinator, Paul Perron.

Mentorship Program

One of the main objectives of the Guild is education.  This is achieved through demonstrations and classes held by The Guild on a regular basis.  Sometimes, these demonstrations and courses can be assuming.  Since not all woodworkers are at the same skill levels, we've all been at that starting point somewhere in our life - be it 15 or 75.  The mentorship is designed to help those wanting to learn the basics.   Members can work one on one with a mentor to pick up some key information, learn basic skills, or even just get some help on where to start that first project.  For more information, please contact our education director.

Woodworking with Youths

Members of the Guild regularily and individually participate in programs involving youths.  Guild members have in the past and currently, been involved with the following:

Yarrow Youth Farm - This facility is set up to assist 'at risk' youth in the community.  Members of the Guild had been involved in a weekly program to teach skills to the attendees at this facility in Saskatoon.

Saskatoon Area Schools - Several schools in Saskatoon and area have invited members of the Guild to assist in  the Industrial Arts programs.  Members involved taught specific skills such as carving for an afternoon to students.

Guides and Scouts Some of our members open their shops, and provide time for some Scout groups.   Shown below are Garry Jabusch, with some Guide pathfinders building squirrel feeders, and Paul Perron with the Eastview 40th Beavers, who were introduced to some basic woodworking techniques such as carving, scrolling and bandsaw work.
